The Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) undertook an exploratory evaluation of the mutual understanding strand of the Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU) area of learning. The purpose of the work was to review, and share effective practice of, how mutual understanding is preparing children for living in, and contributing to, a diverse society.
The report celebrates the commitment to, and work of, primary schools in creating a culture of respect for, and acceptance of, diversity; it also details some of the challenges facing schools.
The findings are based on the discussions between inspectors and school leaders (principals, vice-principals and PDMU co-ordinators) and groups of children, across a sample of twelve primary schools.
ETI thanks all the leaders and children who contributed to this report.
